Verb type 1 (-VA)
To form the stem, remove the -A.
- soittaa (verb type 1 ) → soitta- / soita-
Conjugates as follows:
- soitan
- soitat
- soittaa (double the last letter of the stem)
- soitamme
- soitatte
- soittavat
Verb type 2 (-dA)
To form the stem, remove the -dA.
- myydä (verb type 2 ) → myy-
Conjugation:
- myyn
- myyt
- myy (no change to stem)
- myymme
- myytte
- myyvät
Exceptions: tehdä, nähdä (see Consonant gradation).
Verb type 3 (-CCA)
E.g. -llA, -stA, -nnA, -rrA.
To form the stem, remove the -CA, and add -e- before the personal ending.
- ajatella (verb type 3 ) → ajattel-e-
Conjugation:
- ajattelen
- ajattelet
- ajattelee (double last letter of stem)
- ajattelemme
- ajattelette
- ajattelevat
Verb type 4 (-VtA)
To form the stem, remove the -tA and add -A-.
- älytä (verb type 4 ) → äly-ä-
Conjugation:
- älyän
- älyät
- älyää (double last letter of stem, unless that would create a triple A )
- älyämme
- älyätte
- älyävät
Verb type 5 (-itA)
To form the stem, remove the -tA and add -tse-.
- mainita (verb type 5 ) → maini-tse-
Conjugations:
- mainitsen
- mainitset
- mainitsee (double last letter of stem)
- mainitsemme
- mainitsette
- mainitsevat
Exceptions: selvitä (verb type 4 ) and hävitä (verb type 4 ) do end in -itA like verb type 5, but are conjugated as verb type 4.
Verb type 6 (-etA)
Some people may add a rare 6th verb type; it has overlap with verb type 4.
